FAQ

General

How is my privacy protected?

Your protected health information (PHI) is securely stored on a HIPAA compliant practice management software called Simplepractice.

Do you have any discounts?

Oakhouse Counseling does have a sliding scale option. Considering your household income and your required expenses, what would you be able to afford per session? Our full fee for individual sessions is $150 and we slide down to $70.

How do I know if you're the right counselor for me?

That's a great question!
Remember that choosing a therapist is a very personal matter. No one therapist is a great fit for everyone. It is important that you feel a sense of trust with your therapist and that they can help you.

A great way to find out if Oakhouse is the right kind of service for you is to....schedule a consultation call! It's like any other conversation you might evaluate: is it easy to talk to this person? Can I imagine being honest and vulnerable in a session? Do I feel respected and heard? Does this counselor seem to know what they're talking about, ask good questions, and remain hopeful that there is a great pathway to getting better?

Online Sessions

How do online sessions work?

They work great! We use a service called 'simplepractice' so we can offer 'telehealth' services to our clients. Secure, confidential video conferencing keeps you safe while you get the help you need.

What happens if the technology isn’t working?

Well, that rarely happens, but if it does - we got you covered.
If you get disconnected, just wait for your counselor to reconnect the video. If that doesn't work after a few attempts - you can either opt to continue the session over the phone (without video) or you can call back within 24 hours to reschedule. If your call disconnects or you run out of minutes, just use a different phone to reschedule (within 24 hours). We know glitches happen, but we work hard to make it as easy as possible - for your schedule (and ours!).

Since it’s telehealth, can I conduct my session anywhere?

Yes, anywhere. You'll want a safe, confidential location of course. Driving and counseling aren't a good mix. Just make sure it is a place where you can focus without distraction or the risk of being overheard. We go deep to get better - the barista at the coffee shop probably doesn't need to know that much about you.

Insurance

Do You Take Health Insurance?

We are considered 'out of network' and we don't take insurance. But we can be creative with how we handle payment. I am happy to provide you with a form you can send to your insurance for possible reimbursement. That means you’re responsible for the fees at the time of our appointment, but depending on your plan, a certain percentage of that may be paid to you by your insurance company. We encourage you to call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out what your “out-of-network” benefits are just so there aren’t any scary financial surprises. Ask them where to send what’s called a “Superbill,” that’s the form your counselor will give you.

Why we don't take insurance

Here are a few reasons: reduced ability to choose who you see for treatment, pre-authorization hoops, and reduced confidentiality, and lastly - unforeseen negative results from a psychiatric diagnosis.
